"Some advice for those who are becoming gluten free dairy free (this is probably true with any diet) is that you have to embrace new textures. Open yourself to new textures like the slipperiness of steamed dumplings, chewiness of potato noodles, or brittle crunchiness of rice crackers. I missed sliced bread. Yes, you can buy/make gluten free dairy free sliced bread, but it is not the same. I missed the creaminess in foods like chowder or cheese, but I found it in avocado & nut milks. Then I thought to myself what emotions do these textures that wheat and dairy give us represent? Creamy and bready represent security and nurturing (Laila O. Afrika). So there are ways, other than food to feed our emotional needs. Maybe my children can’t have that milkshake, but I can hug them and tell them I love them. I can nurture their dreams and aspirations. I won’t eat that birthday cake, but I can belly dance or make googalee eyes at my husband. Whenever embarking upon a diet change it is good to reevaluate your relationship and traditions with food, especially your emotional relationship with food. This helped me to focus and commit to the food choices that are best for me and my family." Page 98
