Scroll through the slide show to view some of my work, learn about the ingredients, and how the paste is created.
Henna is a lifestyle.
I remember toddling between my aunties at one of their many tea parties and someone smearing a dollop of henna paste in my tiny palm. Cooling with an herbal scent, the brown paste barely left an orangish stain, but I was hooked. I would beg the women to decorate my hands. When I could get my hands on an almost empty discarded cone, I'd convince my friends to let me doodle on their arms.
By the time I was in middle school, the women were begging me to apply their henna. A few nights before Eid or a wedding, my sister and I would mix henna paste, experimenting with various ingredients from okra to sugar. Then we'd wrap and fill cones. What I love most about henna is the conversation. Henna is an excuse to hang out and relax. During henna application wisdom is imparted between women: sister to sister, mother to daughter. The warm words of woman wisdom, working so closely that I can feel her breath on my palm. Time stands still in that space between the henna artist and her muse. Afterwards, one carries a beauty that catches everyone's eye and tells a story--the beauty of wisdom,
the beauty of Henna.
the beauty of Henna.
Henna forces you to be patient and careful with yourself (waiting for the paste to dry and trying to move without ruining your design).
Henna tells a story of who you are and where you have been. It conveys that someone cares enough about you and thinks so highly of you to take the time to write your story into a design.
